I have a friend that lives about 15 minutes away from me and a few months ago her house flooded, THE ENTIRE HOUSE! It had an inch or so of standing water when they woke up that morning. Here in Texas sometimes we have very intense rain falls that dump a lot of water faster than it can drain and the house sits low enough to where the rain couldn’t soak into the ground quick enough, so it came inside.
This house was pretty outdated to begin with so this started an entire renovation, they were overwhelmed and asked me to help. I told them that I would help them with design and I could take on their 2 daughters bedrooms and their jack and Jill bathroom (the bathroom is the one I did that I previously posted about with the blue beadboard paneling). They had the floors removed and the above photo is what we were working with. They did hire out the new flooring since it was going throughout the whole house.
Here’s the plan: The first bedroom I’m starting on is Novalee’s, she’s 13 years old and both girls want a loft bed because my daughter has one. Mia’s loft bed is pretty cool, but I had a different style in mind for Nova’s after learning what worked and what didn’t work for Mia’s, plus their ceilings are over a foot shorter than ours. Below is Mia’s loft bed I built back in 2020.

I wanted to make this room feel more like Nova, she requested a loft bed so I drew one up on paper for her to approve.

The loft bed will go in this corner, same as her bed is currently (Sorry for the blurry photo, this was taking out of a video, I clearly didn’t take enough before photos).

She also has these 2 closet doors that I wanted to make more modern, I plan on attaching some shiplap paneling to them and painting them. As of now I don’t have any plans for the inside of her closet since she already has some shelving in there.

In this corner, I plan to remove the upper cabinet and replace it with open shelving. The upper cabinet doesn’t have doors so it won’t be taking away any hidden storage she has, it will just be more visually pleasing and more her style. I also want to make new doors for the cabinet that will match the loft bed drawer fronts.
If you have been counting, this bedroom has FIVE doors! 1 entry door, 2 closet doors, a bathroom door and this door that leads to the water heater. In my opinion that is WAY too many doors for a bedroom, but I have a plan! I want to disguise the door so that it doesn’t look like a door, it will just look like a wall treatment but still be functional.

I also want to add a fun ceiling treatment to this room. But first, let’s get this room painted! Nova requested a green color, so I got a sample I thought was perfect and put it up on all of the walls since colors tend to look different on each wall. The color is Sage Green Light by SW. I let her live with those for a little while before painting and she said she wanted it a little lighter, so we lightened the color by 25% but stuck with this same color.

Now that Nova has approved the color, let’s get to painting! But first, I had to move all her stuff out of the way and into the middle of the room. Since they had their new floors put in they were sleeping in another room since I was going to be working on this one.

I always start with the edges, what about you?

Then Nova and her mom (my friend, Andrea) came in and wanted to help so I gave them the roller. Saved me a lot of time! They are taller than me so they could reach higher.

Here is what the color looks like dry. Isn’t it pretty??? I know green isn’t everyones cup of tea, but I love it and Nova loves it, which is really all that matters!

Next up, the loft bed build!
